This book accompanies Luiz Zerbini's first solo exhibition in a museum in São Paulo (São Paulo, 1959) held at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand. The exhibition includes five large paintings (four of them made especially for the occasion), in which the artist critically revisits the genre of historical painting around events in Brazilian history, such as the first mass in the country, celebrated by the Portuguese invaders in 1500 , the Canudos War, in 1896-1897, and the Haximu massacre, in 1993. The catalog also reproduces images of 51 monotypes from the Macunaíma series, which make reference to Mário de Andrade's 1928 book, a landmark in the modernist literature of the Brazil.
